Before every big step or every trip, it’s normal to feel slightly apprehensive and have mixed emotions, working at a summer camp is no different.
Travelling itself is scary, visiting a foreign country, not knowing anyone there, no knowing the place, and waking up in a new location, but that’s also what makes it so exciting.
Your summer at a summer camp is filled completely with the unknown, you may be apprehensive, and worried about what the summer may entail.
Top Tips Before Going To A Summer Camp
There are some ways you can be more comfortable:
Research
Try to find out as much as possible about the camp, where you will be living, and what each day will consist of.
Reach Out To Previous Staff
A great way to find out more information about a summer camp is to reach out to people who have worked at the camp before, strike up a conversation, and ask them any questions you might have.
Take A Look On Social Media
Social media is your friend, you can find images of the camp by searching for hashtags, search tagged images, and the geotag.
Find People Who Are Also Working There
No matter what camp you are working in there will be lots of other people also working in the same summer camp. Many camps put together Facebook groups or messaging groups, to connect staff together – this is a great way to make friends and get to know some people before you go.
You Are Not Alone
Everyone working at the camp will be feeling the same. But you are all going through the same experience and event together.
Be Organised
One way of dealing with anxiety and worry is to be prepared and organised before you depart. Some great ways to do this is by getting prepared early, make sure you have everything you need and more.
Print out all of your visa information, double and triple-check you have everything you need. Lists are also your friend.
Ensure you have all the information for your flight, and you know where you are being picked up to head to camp.
Summer Camp Handbook
Depending on the camp you are heading too, they may have a handbook that contains all the information you need to know about the camp. This will be your best friend! Spend time reading through every detail, so you can be as prepared as you possibly can.
These handbooks will outline camp details, orientation details, camp traditions, and everything you can expect for your summer.
Remember it’s ok to have mixed emotions about your camp job, travelling anywhere is a big step, especially on your own, not many people would have the courage to even apply.
Travelling allows you to meet new people, make friends, and get out of your comfort zone. And the best things come from getting outside of your comfort zone!
